Huntsville, AL – The American Cancer Society recently announced its 2017 Spirit of Relay Awards, seeking to honor and recognize all those who have gone above and beyond to help the organization lead the fight for a world without cancer through the Relay For Life movement. Blake Williams, a 2016 graduate of East Limestone High School and current student at Mississippi State University, received the Youth Achievement Award.

“Blake is an outstanding individual with so much passion for the mission of the American Cancer Society,” said Cherry Hammonds, Community Development Manager. “Even while away at school, he works diligently to secure sponsorships for the Relay For Life of Limestone County. On behalf of the American Cancer Society, I would like to sincerely thank Blake for all that he has done and will continue to do in the fight against cancer.”

The Youth Achievement Award recognizes one Youth Lead nationwide for achieving excellence in youth engagement at their event, as evidenced by increased youth participation and successful youth campaigns and activities. Over the past two years, Williams played an instrumental role in driving the success of the Music for a Cure fundraiser, which showcased area musical talent, while engaging high school band and booster club students.

“I have a passion for it because there have been so many people in my life touched by cancer,” said Williams. “One of the things I really like is that I get to create awareness for all types of cancer. There have been some other volunteers along the way who have taken me under their wing these past two years and really inspired me to work hard. I’m incredibly grateful for Michelle Williamson, Gina Yarbrough and Tammy Waddell. I also wouldn’t be able to be involved in Relay For Life if it weren’t for the unwavering support of my parent, family and friends.”

“This fundraising helps ensure strong support from students in our Relay For Life event, and Blake worked with the students to help make it possible,” added Hammonds.

This nationwide awards program celebrates the success of more than 80 individuals and Relay For Life events in 22 different award categories.
